Bast by redheaded-step-child Bast by redheaded-step-child
The magnificent Solar Goddess, Bast (or Bastet) is the great Egyptian Goddess of Cats and protector of women and children. All cats were treated as her own children, and were themselves highly revered, being presented jewelry by their owners, often eating from the same plates, and given special funeral rites and rituals upon their deaths. Bast is also associated with perfumery, as her name (as Bastet) translates to "She of the Ointment Jar" earning her the epithet "Perfumed Protector", and is one of the avenging Eyes of Ra, protecting and avenging her people.

This was my first painting in about 6 months, so Bast has become very special to me! I don't have a new desk yet in my new place, so I painted her while sitting cross-legged on the floor with my two cats running around wreaking havoc until they settled down to watch me paint. :giggle:

This is so gorgeous...I love love love the detail of her wearing a cat mask rather than having the head of a cat. :) She really is beautiful, I love the style you used and I love the kitties swirling out within her robes. :)

Amazingly done, as usual! I love the symmetry yet asymmetricalness that's going on and I also like that you put in the sun behind her. The way the cats are incorporated into the folds of the clothing is really clever too! You've definitely made an awesome comeback!

Thank you so much! Those cats took some doing, but I was thrilled that they came out alright. :D It wouldn't have had nearly as much impact without them, I think.

Man.. back and with a vengance aye? *big hug* Love this depiction of Bast.. she's got such a sensual feeling, which is definitely a great deal of what I associate with her... just lovely my dear!

Thank you! I think of Bast as being very sensual and exotic too, it's all part of that "catlike" mystique I guess.

Hehe, if my Bast is kitty-approved, I can ask for no higher praise! Actually my two cats seemed to like it too, they kept nuzzling it, and a few times they stretched in front of it and looked like they were bowing! :lmao: They always stopped before I could get to a camera... :(

Haha! Felines are funny and fascinating creatures! I have two cats myself, a brother and a sister. My girl actually loves the camera and will pose endlessly, her brother on the other hand is not so easy to catch so getting a good shot of him is a rarity and a privilege when it happens.

I like that they always want to get involved, especially when one tries to be creative, whether it's painting or cooking. So with that considered I could not not like your version of the Cat Goddess.

Thank you! I actually used many different shades of browns, oranges and even blues underneath to keep it from looking too flat. I'm glad it turned out alright! :)

thanks for the great art and creativity. How do you pick what you'll paint?
Reply
:iconredheaded-step-child:
I'm not sure, I guess I just paint what interests me. Just about everything seems to put an image in my head. Some take longer to come together, and others are clear right off the bat. Usually I just pick whatever's the most vivid to me at the time, other times seeing a cool stock pose, or a color that grabs my attention, or reading a good story will kickstart something.
