Hades by redheaded-step-child Hades by redheaded-step-child
Hades, Greek God of the Underworld, who presides over the shadowed realm of the dead with his abducted Queen, Persephone. Although a dark, inflexibly stern God, he is by no means evil, and maintains order in the shrouded lands that bear his name.

He is shown waiting for his beloved Queen's return from her time on Earth during the Spring and Summer months, holding a pomegranate, a reminder of their eternal bond.

Stock used as reference for Hades came from the amazing *justmeina

I love Hades, one of the somewhat decent Greek gods. I think his feelings are conveyed clearly in this picture. ^^

I love the picture, you truly captured a lonely lovesick feeling to it, however you might want to look at his hand again, the thumb is either on the wrong side or is too thin
Wynnifredd Featured By Owner Jul 1, 2015
Actually shug, if you look, that's his far arm, the near arm is under his cloak. She got it right.

and hey, who says he cain't go above during the summer and spring months, huh? ;)

I kind of love Hades, and you depicted him beautifully

Neato~ Gotta feel bad for Hades ya know? Zeus and Poseidon gave him the crappy job of being God of the Underworld, its not a surprise that Hades has a large hate for his brothers.

thank you. I love a GOOD Hades, instead of a cruel/evil Hades

I think this painting shows a more 'romantic' Hades. Yeah, I DID imagine him a little 'cruel' looking, but this photo completely changes my opinion, and now I prefer him much more. :) Thanks for showing me that side of him xD

I love his expression, he looks so sad.

It's rare to see a depiction of Hades as who he really was to the ancient Greeks, and not some demonic reaper of souls.
Awesome work! =]
The story of Hades and Persephone is one of my favorites. XP

Lovely...shows him as compassionate and not an ugly evil monster as he is perceived to be....great job <3

I've always seen Hades as a handsome yet ruthless man, and every picture I see of him is either the Disney version or an ugly version of him. I liked how you drew him and how he is waiting for Persephone.

wow...he...kind of looks like me.
BowlOfButter Featured By Owner Feb 26, 2010
This is exactly the way I pictured Hades. Hades is a pretty reserved god, not the maniacal, evil being some perceive him to be. Personally, Zeus is the one that creeps me out, being so determined to populate the world with his many offspring.

I love this. They are my all time favorite Greek mythological couple. I really love how the pomegranite was incorporated in your drawing. Its awesome!

I very much like this portrayal of Hades. Definately closer to his nature than the skeleton/demonic ones lying around deviantart!

Thanks for providing a goo, deep, melancholic view of the Lord of the Underworld!

Its indeed kind of stupid how people these days mold greek paganism after christianity; Hades was fairly benevolent, if not one of the most decent gods. At least he wasn't a serial rapist like Zeus

I believe too that he is a good-looking man.And I can see the anticipation in his eyes.He wants so badly to return to him his wife, and everything on earth will be dressed in snow once again.Bravo!:)
Demona-of-the-Mist Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2009
The first thing I thought when I saw that was why is he so sad, then I read the he just misses his wife...poor poor Hades. :tears:
I imagine the Underworld would be a much drearier place for him without her. :raincloud:

Ah, I like this depiction of him a lot more than others I've seen. The others make him into this evil and vile being, while in reality, it really isn't his fault that he is the God of the Underworld. Drawing sticks, come on, what are the chances, lol.
This is a very beautiful piece of work. The significance of the pomegranate is appreciated greatly. The story of Hades and Persephone is one of my favorites.

"Although a dark, inflexibly stern God, he is by no means evil"
Also nice how.... Ordinary he looks :D
I have no thing against people who base Hades depictions off of the Disney depiction
(and, with regularity, end up with a better looking result),
but a problem with Disney for popularizing that particular persona...

I like it. Do you know a lot about Greek Mythology?
I know some, I really like to read Greek myths a lot.

Beautiful. I LOVE the story of Hades and Persephone, and I've always sympathized with Hades more than Persephone, really XD. I've been trying to find books on Greek mythology at the library, but I haven't found too many :(
redheaded-step-child Featured By Owner Sep 4, 2008
The story of Hades and Persephone is my favorite too. :D I like to think of it as a romantic story rather than the violent abduction version.

Me too
FuzzyToastedPeaches Featured By Owner May 20, 2008
Mm, this is one of the better pictures of him I've seen. I really like the handsome and youthful portrayal. It's such a relief from beards.
Thank you! For some reason I always pictured Hades as looking much younger than his brothers.
FuzzyToastedPeaches Featured By Owner May 23, 2008
He was the youngest after all. But I really do like this picture. I always wanted to think of his and his wifes story as romantic and affectionate, and a beard just doesn't speak romance to me.
